Dr Fred Babumba-Lukwago
Dr Fred Babumba-Lukwago is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon with 30+ years of experience in orthopaedics. He obtained his medical degree from Makerere University in 1986, completed his specialist qualification in 1996, and established his private practice in Port Shepstone in 1998 — making him one of the longest-serving specialist orthopaedic surgeons on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast.
He consults at Medpark Centre, 14 Bazley Street, Port Shepstone, and serves as Director at Shelly Beach Private Hospital, where he also consults at the medical suite. His clinical work includes hip and knee replacement, revision joint replacement, fracture management, and sports-related injuries. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 3,000 primary and revision arthroplasty procedures.

Complex Reconstruction & Paediatric Orthopaedics
Dr Babumba-Lukwago has a particular interest in complex orthopaedic reconstruction, limb lengthening and deformity correction, including the use of external fixation frames. His practice also encompasses children's orthopaedic conditions, including Blount's disease and growth-related limb deformities. For selective spine cases, he collaborates closely with neurosurgical and spine surgeon colleagues to ensure patients receive the most appropriate, multidisciplinary care. He provides medico-legal services alongside his clinical work.

Having previously served as Head of Department and Sessional Consultant in Orthopaedics at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, Dr Babumba-Lukwago maintains an active commitment to public healthcare. He continues to undertake sessional work at the hospital, helping address surgical backlogs, manage complex orthopaedic cases, and train and supervise junior doctors. This ongoing involvement reflects his commitment to the community and to sharing his experience with the next generation of doctors.

Outside of medicine and ministry, Dr Babumba-Lukwago is an active runner who has completed multiple parkruns, and maintains his fitness through regular gym training.
